Senator Dave Cox Honors Kathay Lovell as 2008 Woman of the Year

First District State Senator Dave Cox today named Kathay Lovell, a long-time South Lake Tahoe community activist and a leader during the Angora Fire, as First Senate District Woman of the Year.

“The work Kathay has done on behalf of the people of the Tahoe basin is extraordinary. Kathay is dedicated to her community and family. I admire her commitment and sense of duty to serve,” said Senator Dave Cox.

Lovell is a member of the South Lake Tahoe City Council. During the devastating Angora Fire of 2007, she demonstrated poise and leadership in responding to the needs of the community. Lovell won the admiration and respect of elected officials and members of the community for her guidance and resourcefulness as Mayor during this disaster.

Kathay Lovell, a 48 year resident of South Lake Tahoe, has served five years on the South Lake Tahoe City Council and two times as its Mayor. During her term in office she has been a champion of prudent fiscal management, environmental protection, wildlife care, creating new recreation and community education programs, economic growth, community involvement, and civility in local government.

Together with her husband, Lieutenant Les Lovell of the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department, Kathay has raised two children in South Lake Tahoe. The Lovells are proud grandparents of two beautiful grandchildren.

“Lake Tahoe was a wonderful place for me to grow up and raise my children - who are now raising my grandchildren here. Being involved in my community is a joy. I am so grateful and touched to have been selected by Senator Cox for this recognition,” said Lovell.

“The Angora Fire was a difficult time for our community, and together with our elected officials like the Governor, Senator Dave Cox and city staff, we had the resources to get us through this tragedy. I am especially appreciative of the dedication of our public safety officials for their bravery. The generosity of the community to support the Fire Victims was phenomenal. I am most proud of all those who helped,” added Lovell.
