Dutton Report Alert: Watch as Senator Dutton Poses Tough Questions to LAO and Department of Finance - California’s budget is on a direct path towards a fiscal train wreck. I’ve been urging the governor and legislature to act now and declare a fiscal emergency so we can work together to address this deficit that has grown to $10 billion and is likely to get bigger if nothing is done.
Today the Senate Budget Committee was briefed on the seriousness of the situation. I asked some tough questions of both the Legislative Analyst and the Department of Finance. I’m sure when Governor Schwarzenegger is given all the facts concerning the budget by Dec. 10th, he will making balancing the budget his number one priority.
I’ve said for years that California continues to have a spending problem and not a revenue problem. Despite the downturn in the housing market, revenues to the state’s General Fund are projected to increase by $3.6 billion from $95.3 billion in FY 2006-07 to $98.9 billion in FY 07-08.
