The fundamental question at stake with this case is whether the people of California have the right to protect themselves from violent criminals. The essence of the social contract - and the foundation of the American Republic - is the notion that every member of society is endowed with certain inalienable rights. In a state of nature, these rights are subject to violation by predators among us. Thus we establish government to protect those rights. In the words of the American Founders: "That to secure these rights governments are instituted."

Every so often a bill comes along that causes me to wonder if we've completely taken leave of our senses. As I understand the measure before us, it basically would allow unsupervised, overnight visits by children locked up with convicted murderers who happen to be their parents; in this case the mother.
