| May 24, 2002 | Valley Independence Press Conference, Van Nuys City Hall, Statement by Senator Tom McClintock |
| |
The opponents of self-government make three basic claims: They claim that a community of 1.3 million Americans cannot govern itself. They claim that Los Angeles can only survive by holding captive entire communities of dissatisfied citizens. They claim that the entrenched interests that dominate downtown politics have a perpetual hereditary right to impose their will upon a distant and unwilling community. In short, they argue against every principle upon which democracy and freedom are founded. |
